Conservatories in the UK
Conservatories are becoming ever more popular in the UK, and with good reason. They are light and bright, and provide warmth and value to your property. You can use them as an area for entertaining, as an extra room or as somewhere that the children can play safely. Some people even use there conservatory as a green house.
Depending on the style of your house there are many different styles of conservatory to compliment it. This should be an informed decision and take into consideration the numerous conservatory design ideas that rae available. Also of great importance is the purpose for which the conservatory is intended and the budget that you wish to work with.
Victorian Style Conservatories
The design is essentially rounded, giving the structure appeal and quaint lines. They can however, be modified to include a link section, which is a rectangular addition. It does still retain the rounded end though. Most Victorian conservatories have a pitched, as opposed to a flat roof and the design is characterised by the facets or bays, giving a traditional look. Typically, Victorian conservatories are built onto homes that are double storey. This is because the roof starts quite high up the supporting wall. While Victorian conservatories are the most popular, there are numerous other attractive alternatives that could be used. Georgian designs, although aesthetically different, have many of the same features as their Victorian cousins.
Georgian Style Conservatories
Georgian conservatories are shaped very differently. Boasting elegant, smooth lines, the conservatory is more modern and minimalist than the Victorian design. It is also less quaint, and so suits a very different type of house. With square, as opposed to round corners, it has simple, square paned windows and is the ideal shape for a furnished conservatory, because of the convenient shape of the walls. The Georgian shape makes it easy to maximise the available space for entertaining purposes.
Internal Conservatory Design
The design of your conservatory's external structure is merely one aspect of its construction. The interior is equally important if you are wishing to turn the room into a pleasant living space. Also important are the materials used in the conservatory's construction.
Temperature control needs to be considered in all seasons. While the summer sun may fade furniture and overheat the room, there is also a good chance of the room being horribly cold and unpleasant in the winter months. Ventilation can prevent overheating while the correct choice of glass can provide UV protection and insulation to the room, making your conservatory a pleasant environment all year round.
In terms of the interior, the most important decisions that have to be made relate to the flooring and the curtains or blinds that owners choose to put up. Once flooring has been chosen, it is difficult to change. While window coverings are easier to change, this is a costly exercise and it is better to make a well thought out decision in the first place.
Flooring alternatives are an integral part of conservatory design. Options include wooden floors, concrete flooring, carpets or tiles. Carpets are not recommended because they detract form the outdoor feel of the conservatory. Plain concrete flooring is in some ways practical, in that it is easy to clean. It is however, cold underfoot and does little to improve a room's aesthetics. While tiles are aesthetically pleasing they are also cold and the costs involved in keeping the room warm in the cooler months are likely to increase, unless you choose underfloor heating. Wooden floors, on the other hand, are warm underfoot. They also look charming and are easy to clean. A popular choice in many modern conservatories; wooden floors are a great option.
Consider Your Options Carefully
Faced with many possible conservatory design ideas, it is important that homeowners consider them all so as to avoid regretting the decisions that they make. While a conservatory is a charming addition to many homes, the style and furnishings must be in keeping with the character of the house. With so many options available today, homeowners are spoilt for choice.
