Health Benefits of Sunlight21/06/2018
Summer officially starts this week and although it has been feeling warmer recently, you can expect the warmer days to be coming thick and fast now. With longer days, warmer weather and vibrant wildlife, it’s not hard to see why summer is so many people’s favourite time of year. Exposure to sunlight has many health benefits, some that you may know and others you may not.
Health Benefits of Sunlight
Here are some health benefits provided by sunlight:
- Enhances mood and helps sleep – Serotonin is a chemical that is released into synapses in the brain and makes us feel happier. Exposure to bright sunlight will increase the production of serotonin, lifting your mood. Once it’s dark, serotonin is converted to melatonin which is essential for a good night’s sleep. Essentially, the more sun you get the more sleep you get.
- Lowers blood pressure – When sunlight touches the skin, a compound called nitric oxide is released into the blood vessels. This process brings blood pressure levels down – lowering the risk of heart attacks and stroke.
- Strengthens bones – Vitamin D helps to keep your bones healthy, which becomes even more important as we grow older. Human bodies have evolved to get the Vitamin D they need by producing it when bare skin is exposed to sunlight. When the sun is high in the sky, your body will produce more Vitamin D, keeping your bones strong and preventing deficiency diseases such as Ricketts.
- Reduces risk of cancer – While overexposure to harmful UV rays is linked to skin cancer, regular exposure to sunlight (whilst wearing sunscreen) has also been shown to reduce the risks of several cancers including colon and breast cancer. It is all to do with Vitamin D deficiency and a study from the University of California found that incidences of colon cancer were nearly three times higher in New York than in New Mexico.
Making the Most of the Sun
With summer now here, making the most of the sunlight in your garden will likely be a priority for you. Orangeries are a luxurious addition to any home and are almost a hybrid between an extension and conservatory. Through their iconic lantern style roofs, orangeries introduce lots of light into your home, creating a warm welcoming atmosphere. They can be used for a multitude of different reasons and a wide variety of design options give you ultimate control on the look of your orangery.
