Rattan: Furniture that Looks Great Indoors and Outdoors

We have just passed the equinox and the average temperatures are dropping. You can enjoy the changing colours of the leaves, do some bird watching and take in vivid sunsets from the comfort of your conservatory. This seasonal transition means our homes benefit from furniture that functions well in the garden, as well as the conservatory. Just like lots of other retro design trends, rattan furniture is enjoying a renaissance. In this week’s blog, we take a look at what rattan is, and why rattan is absolutely perfect for use as indoor and outdoor furniture.

Remarkable Rattan

Rattan looks similar to bamboo and wicker, but is actually a distinct family of climbing palms. Believe it or not, there are around 600 species of rattan plant. As a climber, the rattan plant is incredibly flexible, as well as durable. Rattan is so strong, there are even bridges in Vietnam constructed from this bendy plant material.

Absolutely Autumn, Really Rattan

In some ways, this time of year presents the best of both worlds. There can be some amazing days weather-wise in September and October, and clear bright skies complement the autumnal colours in the trees, giving us a warm-tingly feeling about the upcoming months. If you want furniture that can be used both indoors and outdoors, and is therefore easy to reorganise, rattan is an excellent choice. Here’s why:

  • Compared to other furniture types, rattan is lightweight. You can easily move it, should you want to have it outside in the day and inside the conservatory at night.
  • Although rattan is light, it is also durable and stable. This means it won’t blow over on windy days.
  • Ratan can be painted, so it is available in a wide choice of colours. Our conservatory frames are available in a range of 15 different colours. If you like, you can match the colour of your furniture to your conservatory!
  • Rattan creates stylish furniture that is bound to leave a lasting impression on any guest. If you already have a conservatory, the refurb doesn’t have to stop with the rattan furniture. For a thoroughly modern conservatory update, look into having your old conservatory roof replaced.
